I write with a request for general information with reference to Federal Bank Notes, issued by the Government of the United States of America, (1934) series 2001, and wonder if anyone might answer certain queries in this regard. The query will be with a view to verify the authenticity of certain bonds issued that albeit expired, their historical content and in turn value may still be of consequence.

I have acquired the following and want to know if its worth anything. It is a $500 Confederate States of America bill dated Feb 17th 1964. The bill has the following inscription on the back "to my Ida Finnegan with compliments of (owner's name) 8/16 1903" Considering the age of the bill it is in very good condition. 3 of the four corners are sharp. Along the top (in the middle) some of the edge is missing but the bill is totally 100% legible. It is encased in a hard plastic case and has a very readable serial number #24963. Just wondering if this is worth anything? Thanks JT

First, to clear up some confusion, the ridges on the side of dimes, quarters and half dollars are called "reeding" rather than perforation (note the spelling) which is a term that applies to the holes that separate stamps or other paper products. Reeding was originally used on silver coins to detect tampering. The practice has been continued on the current copper-nickel issues simply as a matter of tradition. Second, the "lead pennies" are not lead, they are zinc-coated steel cents and were issued in 1943 so that the copper normally used could be diverted to the war effort. As a starting point to determine prices I'd suggest getting hold of a book such as the Red Book from Whitman Publishing which shows conditions and mint marks along with approximate retail prices for nearly all American coins of the last 2 centuries. Another possibility is to look at some of the pages from the URL posted above from the Coinclub site. A dealer will give you a more accurate appraisal of the prices you could get by selling the coins but of course they will normally charge for that service since grading is a lot of work. In any case remember there is no hard and fast price for an individual coin since the market fluctuates almost daily, but you should still be able to come up with some reasonable figures for the value of your hoard.

Several years ago, my mom was getting some soda out of a vending machine. When she got her change out of the change return she receive a quater that had no markingings on it at all. The sides were perferrated like a normal quarter but there were no markings on the front or the back. Does this unmarked coin have any value other than 25 cents. Also my grandmother passed away leaving over 80 old dimes, 200 buffalo nickles, lead pennies and "tons" of copper pennies. There were also two large old pennies one dating back to 1849 and the other unreadable. How can I go about having them appraised? Are there any web sites I could go to to see how many of these I can identify and evaluate their value? I would like to divide this collection so that I can give each of my Grandmother's children a portion of this collection. Thank you, Garry J. Cline

Your listing for the Canadian Small Cent Gardmaster Album lists the Canadian small cent as starting 1921 not 1920. Is this a misprint since the small cent started in 1920? I am looking for a Canadian album for the small cent and this is the only one that I found. If you know of any other album that will fit my needs please let me know. Thank you very much for your attention to this matter.

5 dollar gold coin - if it's a quarter ounce coin, it should have a bullion value of 360/4 $20 - ounce was the old standard. you could double or perhaps triple it if the condition was exceptionally good. however, 1934 is the year after fdr's confiscation, i don't know if such a thing exists.

I have a Confederate States of America bill for $1,000. No. 297 With interest paid at .10 a day from Montgomery. Signed on May 28, 1861. From what I could see of your background with the dollar coin and the confederate bill. The bill is identical to the one I see in the background. I could not get to page 7 for a closer look. Could you tell me how much this money is worth? It is an origanl piece. Also could you tell me how to go about selling it. It came from my dear grandmother who passed awy, and she left it for me in her bible.
